A government innovation team in Durham, North Carolina recently tested several ideas with real commuters. The best one was so effective, it landed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.org\/blog-posts\/durhams-plan-to-nudge-drivers-out-of-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">million-dollar prize from Bloomberg Philanthropies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"A Greener Commute: One City&#039;s Story by Sanford School @ Duke\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F586434546&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Durham Mayor Steve Schewel says the whole project started with the need for more parking spots in the city. Ninety percent of downtown commuters ride alone, and the city has been considering building a new parking deck, which would cost $20 million dollars. But rather than building a new parking deck, Mayor Schewel wondered, could they figure out how to reduce the number of drivers instead?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can do that,\u201d Mayor Schewel says, \u201cwe can stop building parking decks \u2026 and we really want to stop building parking decks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Schewel assembled <a href=\"https:\/\/durhamnc.gov\/3238\/Innovation-Team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a team of employees from city hall<\/a> and the city\u2019s transportation department. They also pulled in experts in human behavior at the Center for Advanced Hindsight at Duke University.<\/p>\n<p>The team brainstormed a bunch of ideas for how to change commuter habits. Should the city pay people not to drive? (It could be cheaper than building the parking deck.) Could they create a Tinder-like app to match would-be carpoolers?
